Saint Wenceslaus Catholic School Office Update

From the Office of the Principal:

Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Friends of SWS:

What an impression St. Wenceslaus School and Church have had on this community for so many years. We are located in the heart of our town because we were established at a time when German Catholics and Czech Catholics immigrated and settled in this area. Their faith is what brought the two origins together. People in the 1800s worshiped together, socialized together at the church, raised funds for their causes, and educated their children together. Yes, St. Wenceslaus was the heart of their lives.

Now in the 21st century, although there are so many advanced things to draw our attention away from our parish and our school, I believe that the heart of St. Wenceslaus should remain strong.  What a great place for people to worship together. Where can you find friends with like values to socialize with? What a great cause to still raise funds for. And wow, do we have an excellent school where families can educate their children together?

Over Dozinky weekend, I witnessed people gathered in groups connected by family ties and by ties from the church and from the school. The churchyard was filled with people belonging to “our group.” Families were bonding while enjoying the festivities. Those who walked/rode with our parade unit were greeted with cheers and compliments from others who were watching. I observed a direct connection to our parish.   Our heart remains in the center of New Prague and is living here at St. Wenceslaus.

Kim Doyle, Principal

Psalm 86:11
Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart so that I may honor you.

All School Reunion – Let’s fill the school

For all who attended SWS, especially our graduates and those who attended for a few years but may not have graduated. Anyone connected is invited!

Register this week for October 7, our 145th-year All-School Reunion.  We are planning an evening of food, beverages, and entertainment.

Register for the event here.

Current school parents, grandparents, and friends are all invited to attend.

Parents of Grades 2 and 3
We would like your children to sing at the reunion for all of the guests. They do such a lovely job, and we would like to showcase our school with our students.

Please, please, please – make this a priority for your child and our school. Saturday, October 7.

They will sing right as our reunion guests are finishing their dinner.  30 minutes MAX!

They will need to wear their best uniform to perform.

You and your kids are a part of the 145th-year legacy here at SWS. Be proud!

New Prague Homecoming  – Dress in Trojan colors
To celebrate with the New Prague community, all students and staff should wear the NP Trojan colors on Friday. Wear Trojan spirit wear or maroon/black on Sept. 22. The homecoming parade will come past our school. It starts at 1:00 PM. Our students will go outside to watch.

Welcome to our new school counselor
Mackenzie Eckman has been hired to serve our school community as our counselor. She will meet with individual students as requested by teachers and/or parents. Ms. Eckman will also be in all classrooms teaching lessons on behavior, bullying, friendships, work ethics, and other topics as coordinated with the homeroom teachers as needed.

Other Social Emotional Learning  (SEL) activities.
SWS has invested in a curriculum to meet the learning needs of our students. This is a highly interactive program with a professional instructor available to us all year online. Teachers can monitor the mental health of their students through a simple ” daily/weekly question”. They can then choose activities and lessons that address any problems that their students are having at school or even some that are out of school, if appropriate.   We are excited to bring in the program for all K-8 grades. Last year, we tried it out for our students in grades 5-8, and staff found it extremely helpful in guiding students on their social-emotional skill level.

Peace of Mind sessions – What are they?
CSCOE (Catholic School Center of Excellence) provides a licensed counselor who offers sessions strictly for parents of kids in Catholic Schools. Each month, you can register for a virtual webinar with Dr. Jules Nolan.
Topics vary. You may be enlightened and/or comforted along the way with issues that come up with preschool – Grade 8 students.

This month:

Parent session: September 20, 2023 | 7:00 pm

Annual School Marathon – Preschool to Grade 8

The annual marathon is one of 4 required fundraisers. This one brings great excitement to the school as kids earn prizes.  Each student has a goal of collecting funds from family and friends. K-8 = $200 and Prechool = $100.

Generally, the event itself is a fun gathering on Saturday, September 30 – 9:00-10:30 AM. We walk/run around the school campus, have food, and win prizes.

Money is collected ahead of time. You can collect cash, send a check, or anyone can donate online. Each donation will be credited to the designated student to count toward their total.

A super easy way to spread the word is to send or post this link for friends to respond directly to the school with a donation.

NWEA Testing K-8

This week, we will test our students to see where their growth is based on the National test. The tests are used primarily by the teachers to program their curriculum and set specific goals for learning with the students in their classrooms.

We set the baseline with the fall set of tests. We then predict their growth by the winter testing time and again for the spring. The goal is to have each child grow from where they are now to their desired goal. Each child has a different level to work towards.

Teachers can work with our NWEA trainer to find spots in the curriculum that will benefit that particular classroom of students.

Math on Tuesday, Reading on Thursday  for all K-8
Language will take place next week for grades 3-8.

Each test test 30-60 minutes, depending on grade level. Encourage your students to read carefully and answer carefully – not to simply click the button randomly to move on. Testing taking place on a computer or ipad.

Dozinky Parade Float – Thank you!
Thanks to all of the amazing parents and teachers who came to help with the parade float and to all of the students who joined us.

Our School Advisory Council purchased the candy and decorated the float. They are all so appreciated. Without them, this event would not have happened.

A special thanks to George and Elsie Tupy, who provided the float for us and pulled us in the parade.
