Saint Wenceslaus Catholic School Office Update

From the Office of the Principal:

Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Friends of SWS;

I hope everyone enjoyed their time away from school over the past week. It is always nice to take a break, no matter what we are doing or where we go. A nice diversion from our routines provides the rest we need for body, mind, and soul.

This week is crunch time for our school accreditation team visit. The visit is scheduled to take place next week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Our staff has been working very hard on a report and a strategic plan of action over the past two years with some input from the representatives of your school advisory council. The team visit is a point where others come in and look to see if we are on track with our strategic plan and that we see ourselves as outsiders would see us, validating and making suggestions to help us grow.  An introduction of the team members is contained within this week’s news below.

The team will work in the school during their three-day visit. They will interview teachers and students, talk with parents at pick-up and drop-off times, possibly make phone calls to school community members, and meet with most of the school and parish leaders. They will dig deep into our policies, procedures, handbooks, budgets, and all of the documents that are required to make our school function as it does.

After the visit, they will give us a report in which we will examine their suggestions for improvement and incorporate them into a long-range strategic plan that becomes our road map for the next 5-7 years. This process is what assures all of us that our school is a vital, active, and growing place for our students to learn.

Kim Doyle, Principal

Psalm 86:11
Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart so that I may honor you.

SWS Middle School shout out!
Sometimes we take things for granted. A perfect example of this concerns our very own SWS middle school program, so let’s highlight a few things here:

Our middle school teachers are top-notch, each skillful in their content area, but more importantly, each one truly cares about the success of their students. They help the students become independent and confident learners. They help the students grow up so that they can hold their own academically, socially, and spiritually. As parents, we often want to keep our children little, and we are all guilty of “babying them” a bit. Our teachers help students make a transition to be capable of doing it on their own. It has been testified over and over again by past students and parents that their kids have done so well in high school because of the skills that the SWS middle school teachers taught them. Likewise, we often hear from high school teachers how well-trained our students are in learning, studying, self-advocating, and overall classroom skills.

In our middle school program, the students are given so many wonderful opportunities. They have leadership roles. They get a chance to work as a team. They learn to perform and discuss confidently. The students learn through the STEM philosophy of collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication. They are pushed to become higher-level in these areas and we see when they graduate from 8th grade how that pays off in many big ways. They are in small groups where they get noticed and can be involved – even the shyest. A smaller environment means they have more chances to stand out.

Above all, the longer a student attends a Catholic School, the more likely their faith and faith practices will stick. The students have opportunities to learn so many things in their daily religion classes. They can join in the traditions and in the practices of our faith in a deeper way than the little kids. They do service and learn about how to serve others near and far. Past students often write about their days at SWS and, years later, present their faith writings to the school or to a particular teacher. They connect in ways that are incredible like you would with brothers and sisters.

There is so much a middle school program in A Catholic School like ours has to offer. Don’t take all the good for granted.

The middle school lock-in is coming up soon! This is one fun night for both teachers and students. Thanks to the middle school teachers for making this special night happen for our students.

Ron McBroom Project

The recipient of the “Spirit of St. Wenceslaus Award” is gifted with the choice of one special project for the school that donations can be directed to at any point throughout the year. Ron has chosen a project to help the school purchase new Religion textbooks and supplies.  Our supplies could use a nice upgrade. Funds donated for this project at the Starry Night and all funds designated for this project for the next year will go to make this happen.  This is an amazing project and a great gift to the school.

Please share this with others who may want to gift the school at this time.

Peace of Mind School has been awarded to SWS

Beginning with the 2024-25 school year, our school will become one of the Peace of Mind Schools awards by CSCOE (Catholic School Center of Excellence). This means that our teachers will be getting extensive training and continued coaching to deal with students who need SEL. SEL stands for “Social Emotional Learning”.  Our teachers will be attending special workshops over the summer to help them learn skills and techniques. Then, in the fall, we will be assigned a counselor who will guide and coach the teachers regularly. This is a huge gift to the school that is funded by CSCOE. We are lucky to have been chosen to become a Peace of Mind School.
